My Diabetes Inklings

Uniting The Diabetes Community

Kerri is an inspiration to many people living with diabetes. For me, it’s her advocacy work to unite the diabetes community and to give voices to the unheard that has earned her a place as one of my diabetes heroes. Check out her recent interview about breaking the diabetes stigma.

Often, people stigmatise and discriminate without even knowing because it’s accepted as the norm. Take for instance referring to desserts and lollies as diabetes inducing. These jokes aren’t humourous. In fact, they simply encourage misconceptions about diabetes. As a diabetes community, we should be working together to raise awareness for all types of diabetes and to support each other. Diabetes is hard to live with day in and day out, no matter the type. The emotional burden associated with diabetes affects each and every person living with diabetes. And everyone deserves an equal opportunity to access medical supplies and support if they require it. There is no place for stupid petitions to further separate and divide us as a diabetes community.
